On June 1, 2017, the Alpena County Commissioners and Sheriff appointed the Committee and charged members with the following tasks:

• Define role of jail in the local criminal justice system

• Explore jail population characteristics

• Analyze trends and project needs

• Review and consider alternatives that might reduce demand for jail beds

• Finalize future jail bedspace needs

• Identify alternative solutions to meet needs

• Evaluate solutions, including 30-year life cycle cost projections

• Review potential sites (if new site is needed)
